Bath remodels are unforgiving on waterproofing, ventilation, and finish-commitment. Get these right and the bath lasts 20+ years.
Do
- ✓Use a proper waterproofing system (Schluter Kerdi or similar) behind every wet wall — not just backer board and thinset.
- ✓Spec the exhaust fan for the room volume and run it on a humidity-sensing switch.
- ✓Curbless shower with linear drain reads most modern and is easier to clean than a center drain.
- ✓Include electric mat radiant under tile floors in primary baths — impossible to add later.
- ✓Commit to one plumbing-fixture finish family across faucet, shower trim, tub filler, towel bars, and accessories.
Avoid
- ✗Polished marble floors in a wet area — slip risk and etch from products.
- ✗Cheap fan-only exhaust — Utah's dry winters hide a mold problem until the drywall comes off.
- ✗Mixing five plumbing finishes — brass faucet, chrome shower, black towel bar, nickel sconce — reads chaotic.
- ✗Open-base vanity construction in a primary bath — splashes and hair show.
